Museum on a winter night

Discovery North Bay has been offering educational programs for North Bay area schools for several years. Each year the number of programs has increased and their content has become more diverse. All programs have been developed to compliment the Ontario curriculum.

Walk n' Swap - Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6

The Walk and Swap program explores the history of early downtown buildings in North Bay. Children will learn about the challenges of commerce facing early North Bay settlers long before the conveniences of cars, computers and cell phones! Currencies, systems of trade, bartering and the general store will be examined by our historical interpreters. We will take indoor breaks to warm up or cool down, but some of the tour will be outside; please dress appropriately. Tour highlights include a visit to early merchants, and bartering for goods at an old fashioned confectionary. A small treat at the Nutty Chocolatier will conclude the tour.

CSI, Cultural Scene Investigator - Grade 1 to 8

Our museum staff detective, Sherlock Sleuth is asking for help from the community! The museum has just received a mysterious time travelling package. Who did it belong to and where it come from? Did it belong to the first mayor of North Bay? Perhaps the mysterious package was delivered from a downtown shop in the year 1910. The group will help Sherlock Sleuth solve the mystery. Children will express their inner CSI as they learn how to examine real museum artefacts for historical clues. Children love to visit the investigation station stocked with curator tools. Mystery objects are explored. Is it a thingamabob or a what-cha-ma-call-it? A scavenger hunt in the museum galleries will test even superior sleuths! Certificates from Sherlock Sleuth after completing the program will declare participants as certified CSI (Cultural Scene Investigators). .

Downtown History Hike - Grades 2 to 8

An hour long walking tour of the downtown core will be followed by a self guided half hour visit in the museum galleries. Children participating in the walking tour will become familiar with the historical development of North Bay. They will develop and retain a personal identity by becoming acquainted with the historical roots of the community and culture of his or her origin and by developing a sense of continuity with the past. Tour highlights include a visit to the former jail and a sneak peek in the old Normal school. The group will discuss answers to the following questions along the tour: Why did your community develop? Why did it develop in this location? When did the community begin? How has the community changed over the years? Why have these changes occurred?

West End Walk - Grades 2 to 8

Have you ever wondered about the history behind some of the elegant and vast homes in the West End of North Bay? Some of the areas earliest and most influential people built homes in the Courthouse area of the city. Most of the homes in this area have interesting stories to share, if only walls could speak!Visit the homes of early lumber barons, senators, mayors, scrupulous business owners, and railway CEOs. Learn about the tragically short life of the first, youngest and most prolific architect in North Bay. A leisurely walk among the century homes and their canopied trees is sure to delight!

Medieval Times - Grades 1 to 8

Your journey back in time will take you to a place of castles, knights and feuds. Discover the complex community behind castle walls that continues to fascinate us today. When not engaged in warfare, castle residents enjoyed activities such as feasting, games, crafts, music, songs, and storytelling. Learn about these aspects of medieval life and more by visiting "Once Upon a Time" the medieval exhibit @discoverynorthbay.

Tales From A Cemetery - Grades 3 to 8

Explore North Bay's local history and geography as well as the visual arts through an in-depth study of cemeteries. By visiting Union Cemetery in North Bay, we will look for historic clues about the early settlers to the area, learn to read a gravestone and interpret symbols and inscriptions, discuss location and environment of a cemetery, and end the program with sketches and rubbings of gravestones.

Nipissings: The Way of the Manitous - Grade 6

Students will explore the world of our country's First Nations through a discussion of our local native group, the Nipissings. Artifacts from the collection, the telling of local native legends and hands-on activities will help the students understand how the environment played an important role in the lives of the Nipissings and how interactions with Europeans changed their world.

Going Wild - Grade 1 to Grade 8

Children will learn about urban greening projects and how our community is becoming more ‘green’ every year. The group will meet at the waterfront and visit the North Bay Heritage Gardens. Different types of flowers, plants and the importance of public parks will be discussed along with the plans for an expanded waterfront park. It is hard to imagine the industrial past of our now beautiful waterfront. Children will have the opportunity to share the industrial ‘before’ pictures of the now green sites. It has been a truly amazing transformation, and it is still improving! Budding environmentalist will be nurtured and practical tips will help us all become better friends with the environment. The program will be concluded with a special planting project that students can take home with them.

Remembrance Day program - Grade 1 to Grade 8

@discoverynorthbayŐs Remembrance Day program recognizes the contribution of the citizens of North Bay who sacrificed their lives during World War One and World War Two. A discussion, artifact analysis, and a special activity will also help students to gain a better sense of the importance these two wars had on our country and local community. Offered yearly November 1-10th


Christmas Program - Grade 1 to 5

Students will explore the history and traditions surrounding the holiday. From the Christmas tree to the importance of the candle, students will submerge themselves in all the trimmings and traditions of this festive time of year.

Students will take part in making their own Christmas crafts by making candles and old fashioned tree ornaments. Offered December 1 - 21st, 2006
